National Club Football Association Details 2022

The National Club Football Association, often referred to as the NCFA is an association of collegiate American Football teams. It is an affiliate of CollClubSports and oversees the NCFA National Championship.

NCFA teams are typically run by student clubs, not faculty. They are not part of an institution’s intercollegiate athletics program. Clubs can be established at any university or post-secondary college, provided that they are officially recognized as clubs football. In contrast the Intercollegiate Club Football Federation (ICFF) recognizes, in addition to the above, student clubs that do not have official sponsorship as well as independent programs that combine students at multiple schools that are otherwise unable to play college football (the NCFA allows its members to play such independent teams but does not allow these teams to compete for championships).

A lot of clubs are members of both the ICFF or NCFA. This is especially relevant in the midwest and south. There isn’t a huge difference between the two except in the Northeast in which a number of NCFA member teams were ejected by the ICFF’s Yankee conference in 2015. The NCFA National Championship Game was played in Salem Football Stadium, Salem, Virginia from 2012 to 2015. This stadium also was the venue for the NCAA Division III Football Championship. From 2016 to 2019 until 2019, the NCFA National Championship Game was held at West Family Stadium on the campus of West Liberty University in Wheeling, West Virginia.

NCFA National Championship

The NCFA National Championship Bowl will be the final match of the National Club Football Association season. It is the place where semi-finalists and winners of the NCFA Playoffs meet. From 2012 to 2014 the game included two of the top teams in the country according to the NCFA Coaches and Power Rankings. The NCFA introduced a eight-team playoff that included four championships for conference teams. The tournament was first introduced in 2015. These four winners would decide semifinalists prior to the finals.

The first simulcast of 2019 NCFA National Championship Bowl Game between The Ohio State University (Ohio State) and Oakland University was broadcast live on video and radio. The Buckeyes defeated the Golden Grizzlies 36-9.

The 2021 NCFA National Championship Bowl Game featured top two teams in league’s Power Rankings, rather than a playoff because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Waynesburg University was selected as the site for the event, which made the game more accessible for remaining teams.

Yearly Postseason Awards

In 2013, the National Club Football Association began to recognize Academic All-Americans with First, Second, and Third Place. Since 2014, the league has been naming the winners of Players of Excellence on both sides of the game and Head Coach of Year awards. Oakland University is the top school in the league with five awards for postseason excellence and George Mason has four.
