What Does the Islamic Greeting Mean?
There are two ways to say salaam:
Al-Salam is a beautiful name for Allah. So, to say “Salam” to someone, “May Allah al-Salam be with you.”
Salam is also a safe word.
Facts You Might Not Know About the Islamic Greeting
From the time of Adam (as) until the Day of Judgment, it was decided that everyone should say it.
The Prophet (saw) said, “When Allah made Adam, He told him, “Go greet that group of angels sitting there and listen to what they say in response because that will be your greeting and the greeting of your children.” Adam (went and) said, ‘As-Salamu Alaikum (Peace be upon you).’ They replied, ‘As-Salamu-Alaikum wa Rahmatullah (Peace and Allah’s Mercy be on you)” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6227)
It will be how the people of Paradise greet each other.
“Those who believed and did good things will be let into gardens with rivers running through them, where they will live forever with the permission of their Lord. Their greeting there will be “Peace!” (14:23)
It makes Muslims love each other more.
“You won’t get into paradise unless you believe in Allah Most High, and you won’t be true believers unless you love each other,” said the Prophet (saw). Will you listen to me if I have something to say that will make you love each other? Give greetings.”
It is one of the best things you can have as a Muslim.
Someone asked the Prophet, “What are the best things about Islam?” The Prophet said, “Feed the people and say hello to everyone, whether you know them or not.”
Initiating Salam
Giving the greeting of salaam is one of the things that Prophet Muhammad (saw), his Companions, and the Righteous have done most often since the beginning of time. It’s how a Muslim signs their name. Most scholars agree that it is Sunnah to start this greeting whenever two Muslims meet.
The Prophet (saw) said, “When two people are walking together, the one who greets first is the better of the two.”
Who should say “salaam” first?
Young people should say hello to older people.
A person on a bike should say hello to someone on foot.
When two groups of Muslims meet, the smaller group should greet the larger group
These hadiths show that the above is true:
“Someone who is walking should greet someone who is riding, and someone who is riding should greet someone who is sitting.”
Replying to Salam
In the Quran, God (SWT) says:
“When someone greets you, greet back with a better greeting, or at least return the greeting in the same way. In fact, Allah is always, above all else, a bookkeeper.” (Quran, 4:86)
“As-salaam ‘alaykum” is better when you add “wa rahmatullah,” and “wa barakatuhu” is even better.
Most experts agree that saying “we ‘Alaykum as-salaam” is enough, even if the first greeting was better.
All scholars agree that it is required for a Muslim to say “salaam” back to another Muslim, with a few exceptions.
If the greeting is mean for a group, only one person needs to respond to the whole group. But if none of them answer, they are all bad.
No matter how the greeting is —in person, behind a curtain, in writing, or through a messenger—it should answer as soon as possible.
When it’s not a good idea to say “Salam.”
- If there is a chance of temptation, a man shouldn’t greet a young woman who is by herself.
- One is in a dirty place, like the bathroom or a park
- When someone is with his family alone.
- Say hello to people who are sleeping or tired
- When someone is eating and has a full mouth.

How to be a good and successful Muslim is laid out in the Quran.
Here is a full explanation of success and what it takes to do well in life. Today, everyone has an idea of what success is. It could be money, power, family honor, etc. But, as we can see, Allah’s definition is completely different and the most accurate. When we try to achieve worldly goals, we have some success. You can say you’re a successful businessman, but that doesn’t mean you’re successful in life. Because of this, the world repeatedly shows that money doesn’t bring happiness by showing how unhappy the rich and powerful are. Our online Quran academy is on the top which is providing online Quran teaching on Skype.
The real definition of a successful person is someone aware of the need to protect his soul, who looks to the Quran for guidance and finds it, and who then goes on to follow the advice they have received.
The most important things that make someone successful are:
Those who believe in what has been revealed to you, Muhammad, and what was revealed before you are sure of the Hereafter. (2:3-4)
You can learn more about these qualities in Taqwa’s first and second articles. Today, we’ll look at how all of these qualities are linked and how each makes the others stronger and helps them move forward. This creates a cycle of success that keeps you going up.
As Allah (SWT) says in the second ayah of this Surah, guidance only helps the Muttaqin, who are aware of God and want to protect their souls. In turn, being guided gives us more Taqwa. Allah (SWT) told the Jewish people:
Getting this kind of advice from the Quran makes it easier to believe in the world beyond what can be seen. Believing in things that can’t be seen makes one’s Taqwa stronger and opens up the heart to receive guidance.
“And for those who get the guidance, He makes guidance even brighter.” (47:17)
Believing in the unseen makes you want to pray to Allah daily and help the people and things Allah made. Because he knows that Allah can see him and that the Angels are keeping track of his actions, etc. When a person feels connected to his Creator through a regular connection with Allah. He is likelier to believe in things that can’t be seen.
Guidance from the Quran doesn’t require belief in it or the other Revelations from Allah, even though Allah (SWT) talks about them many times in the Quran. Believing in the Quran’s authenticity makes it easier to find guidance.
Believing in the unseen world and starting to pray strengthens a person’s belief that they will have to answer for their actions in the Hereafter. When you believe in Allah and all of His goodness, kind, perfect, and fair qualities. You can’t help but be sure that such a Creator and Master wouldn’t let bad things happen and wouldn’t forget to reward good people.
Believing in the Hereafter makes people surer that they must protect their souls from evil, increasing their Taqwa.
It also makes you more careful when you pray and treat Allah’s creations well.
Dr. Islahi explains why conviction in the Hereafter was mentioned separately even though it was included in the category of belief in the Unseen. “It is mentioned specifically to show that even though many people say they believe in the Hereafter. Only those with these qualities. Those who pray, spend in the cause of Allah. And believe in all the revealed books of Allah—believe in the Hereafter and are sure of it.
“The more a person wants to do good things and believe, the more guidance he will get
All of this shows how closely these qualities of success are linked to each other. It’s like a chain reaction, and it all starts with:
“This is the book that can’t be questioned. It is a guide for those who are aware of Allah.” (Quran, 2:2)
