How Does Taif Rose Harvesting Propel Saudi Fragrance Industry?

Saudi Arabia, like the rest of the Middle East, has a rich tradition of fragrances. It is common to find tolahs (a measure) of oud or Taif rose attar in Saudi homes. Moreover, Saudi’s economy is one of the fastest growing in the world. Due to the high individual income, there is a growing demand for luxury products, including perfumes and scented oils. Moreover, the population of Saudi Arabia is rising tremendously, thus driving the demand for luxury fragrance products, especially among youngsters.

Hence, in 2021, the Saudi Arabia fragrance market valued $2,049.7 million, from where it is expected to advance at a rate of 6.1% from 2021 to 2030, to reach $3,500.9 million by 2030. The women of the Middle Eastern region find fragrances crucial for enhancing their appearance and boosting their self-confidence. Perfumes are considered the most-appealing personal care products by women to smell fresh and pleasant. Women have multiple options of perfumes depending on the occasion.

Moreover, during Eid celebrations, the people of Saudi Arabia scent their homes with perfumes and ouds. They also burn bakhoor, scented wood chips, to welcome guests, during their departure, and after prayers. There is a tradition in Saudi Arabia to pass bakhoor over generations and gifting oud on Eid. People buy ouds and bakhoors from various shops as per their requirements. During this festival, the sales of Arabian oud stores rise by 47%.

Saudis’ love for fragrances is now seeping into scented personal care products, such as shaving creams, lotions, body and hair oils, shower gels, and shampoos. In recent years, there has been an increase in the consumer base for health and wellbeing products, giving opportunities to companies to enhance their products, to attract larger pools of users in the kingdom. A product is considered successful when it becomes a signature for the brand’s identity, by catering to the customer’s requirements, in which effective marketing also has a big role.

Further, the growing trend of aromatherapy to treat anxiety and depression leads to the increasing demand for fragrance products. According to a study, the prevalence of anxiety in the kingdom is 35.3%, while the prevalence of depression is 19.7%. Essential oils are extracted from the various parts of plants, such as rhizomes, stems, roots, stalks, wood, fruits, seeds, nuts, peels, and resins. The oils have various therapeutic properties, such as analgesic, antiviral, antiseptic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, fungicidal, heat diuretic, and digestive. The essential oils from flowers are captured by solvent extraction to retain their fragrance.

Similarly, the increasing awareness of physical fitness has led to the rising number of gym-goers. As people spend more time exercising in gyms, they get sweaty. It results in body odor, thus giving an unpleasant experience to them and anyone else who comes near. Therefore, gym-going people are massive consumers of fragrance products, such as sprays, deodorants, and other products. Lately, Arabs have increased their expenditure on grooming products to enhance their personal appearance, by looking and smelling good.

Therefore, the decades-old culture of applying perfumes on clothes increases the demand for fragrance products in the kingdom.
