Choosing the Right Pots for Your Plants

Pots for Your Plants

If you have plants inside your home, choosing the best clay pots for plants is essential. The planter you choose depends on various factors, such as how well a plant grows and how healthy its roots are.

Finding the correct type of indoor plant pots will also depend on the plant you are growing, as this will affect how well it drains water.

Choosing the Right Pots for Your Plants

Choosing the right pot is essential for proper plant care. Make sure that the size and shape of the container match the size of your plant. For example, it should be approximately one-third as tall as the plant. You can measure the height of the highest leaf to find the correct size. If you’re unsure of the exact size, use a separate pot to hold the plant in place. For succulents and cacti, the soil line should be about half an inch below the top leaf.

Regardless of the size of your new pot, select one with sufficient room for root growth. Choose one with a diameter of two to three inches larger than the root mass of the plant. If you’re planning on planting a large plant, choose one that’s at least four inches in diameter. Otherwise, choose a smaller pot. Generally, the larger the pot, the bigger the plant should be.

The type of pot you choose can affect the growth and care of your plants. If you’re a chronic overwaterer, choose an unglazed terra cotta pot. Clay pots are porous and wick moisture out of the soil more quickly than glazed ones. If you want your plants to grow fast, select larger pots that are at least three inches in diameter. A deeper pot is better for broad, deep, and succulents.

Here are the different kinds of pots to determine which is best for your indoor plants.

Types of Pots for Your Plants

Terracotta Pots

Made from clay, plants like succulents, rosemary, and cacti thrive in this sort of planter because it absorbs water and quickly releases extra moisture from the soil. These traditional pots are the go-to for container gardening.

Glazed Ceramic Pots

This pot is sturdy and heavy, making it ideal for keeping plants from falling over. These pots can be glazed in various colors. However, this type of planter can be costly and crack in freezing temperatures.

Plastic Pots

Plastic pots are the cheapest plant pot which makes them easy to obtain. They are lightweight and also come in different colors. While plastic does not biodegrade, it can photodegrade, which can disintegrate when directly exposed to sunlight.

Wooden Pots

If you want a natural look, wooden pots are your ideal option. Wooden pots will survive for years if made properly from long-lasting timbers like cedar or redwood with stainless steel fittings.

Hanging Pot Baskets

Hanging pot baskets are ideal for smaller plants. It gives them ample drainage, so avoid placing anything below them that you do not want to get wet.
