5 Tips for Choosing a Music School

1. Location of the School

When choosing where to attend a music school, it’s important to keep in mind not only how the location will affect you during your school years, but also your future music career. Think about it in terms of context. Is the city your music school in the area you want your contacts to be? Sure, your teachers will likely have connections beyond your school town and students traveling from across the country.

However, you will spend a lot of time in the city where the music school is located. While not a make it or break it factor, it really is something to consider.

2. What Programs are Offered?

If you’re interested in making music, you don’t have to choose a music school that only offers instrument programs. You can also say whether you want to study piano or keyboard, and the music school you attend is more focused on the technical side of music.

Do not try to change your desires and passions with a music program that is not very suitable. Find a music program and curriculum that fully covers what you want to learn and do in the music industry. Remember: do you want a certificate? Or do you want a diploma? And if you want a degree, do you want a bachelor’s or associate degree? Knowing these aspects will determine the length of time you intend to enroll in a music college.

3. Audition Preparation

The music school audition is the most important part of your admission to the music school of your choice. It is advisable to start preparing for the audition at least six months before the deadline. No matter what music school you see, the most important tip and idea is to ace this audition.

During the preparation for the audition, it is good to have the opportunity to practice as a member of the teaching staff of the music faculty for your own audition. Any advice they can give can only help you improve. If they can’t, ask some friends or family. They may have had no prior experience as a faculty member, but the feedback was great!

4. Unique Faculty

Finding a music school with exceptional faculty in your field is key to your success as a musician or record producer. Entering a school with knowledgeable teachers can be critical to your future career. These teachers will play an important role in your music education and your networking skills when you graduate. Most music schools list their teachers on their websites. Take the time to look at their bios, what they’ve done, and if they’re still working on projects today.

5. Successful Graduates

You could argue that the success of a music college is directly related to the performance of its graduates and students. A music college can have a great program (and it’s great!), but when students draw, it can never make a splash in the music industry, which is a problem.

That doesn’t mean music school superstars from all over the world should come out of their doors. However, if there are multiple music schools you’re sitting between, check out their alumni page (if they don’t have an alumni page, that’s a big red flag). Don’t pay too much attention to the names, instead check what they have done, what qualities they know and what careers they have started.
